Waiting List Be Gone!

I am very pleased to report that we no longer have a waiting list for our counseling services in our Dubuque office!  We hired an amazing new therapist has managed to see all 24 that have been waiting.  I must say, it is an amazing feeling to know that we are no longer contributing to why someone may not be receiving counseling services.  With that said, we have a lot of work to do.

I believe one of the reasons we had a waiting list in the first place was because we finally have begun effectively educating the community about our services while empowering those effected by sexual violence to come forward and seek out help.  Can you imagine if we actually served everyone in our community that has been raped or sexually assaulted?  Do you have any idea how many therapists we would need to have on staff?

Well, let’s do some math:  We serve Dubuque, Delaware, Buchanan Counties in Iowa, Jo Daviess and Carroll Counties in Illinois, and Grant, Lafayette, and Iowa Counties in Wisconsin.  The total population of those 8 counties is 259,329.  Let’s assume 51% of that number is female.  (132,257).  Now, we know that 1 in 3 women are sexually assaulted before the age of 18 here in the tri-states…so…that’s gives us 43,645 women that have been sexually assaulted. (wow, by the way)

Stay with me now…

A full time therapist typically has 30 clients at any given time.  That of course leaves me with the goal of figuring out how to hire 1,454 more therapists to see the women in our community. I suppose I will start with that goal before I tackle the additional therapists needed to see the thousands of men that have been sexually abused as well.

To close with a more serious thought, think about the 24 women, children, and men that no longer sit at home wondering when they will be given the opportunity to begin their healing.  It’s that thought process that keeps me going and pushes me to work harder every single day.

  1. allowing people the opportunity to heal is amazing…
